Black Hammer Getting Dark Horse’s Library Treatment

Dark Horse’s drool-inducing Library Editions are literally the best way to read comics. Oversized, hardcover, full of extras—these things are sweet. Black Hammer, Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s 2017 Eisner Award winner for Best New Series, is the latest comic announced to get the Library Edition treatment. I know it summer is just starting, but can it be October yet?

Black Hammer, a comic with excellent writing and excellent art, is a departure from your average superhero story. This series grabbed me from the very beginning, and it goes remains one of those comics that you must read in your lifetime. Here’s a small description to pique your interest.

Mysteriously banished from existence by a multiversal event, the old superheroes of Spiral City now lead simple lives on a bizarre farm from which there is no escape. But as they employ all of their super abilities to free themselves from this strange purgatory, a mysterious stranger works to bring them back into action for one last adventure! – Dark Horse Comics

As with all of the Library Editions Dark Horse puts out, this book will giant. It contains 408 pages, and that includes Black Hammer #1-13, the usual sketchbook extras, tons of guest art, and of course, a beautifully printed hardcover.

If you haven’t read the series yet, I strongly urge you to check it out. The $49.99 price tag probably isn’t for new readers, but if you’re a collector, then you can preorder now. It’s probably going into production very soon, so that means that you won’t be able to get your hands on it until October 24, 2018. Five months away seems like a lot of time, but it will be worth it when you walk out your front door and see a flat, rectangular box sitting on your front porch.
