Crowdfunding platforms can bring people’s dreams to life. What if instead, they could sign someone’s death warrant? Image Comics’ newly announced thriller, Crowded, gives us a look at a much darker crowdfunding future, where deadly assassinations get funded instead of the casual table-top game. Good luck surviving when anyone can run a Reapr campaign on you.
Crowded is basically what happens when you mix Black Mirror, Smoking Aces, and Kickstarter. It centers around Charlie Ellison as she tries to survive until a 30-day Reapr campaign for her assassination. To help her, she hires “the lowest-rated bodyguard on the Dfend app.” It’s an idea that’s so simple yet so brilliant, taking inspiration from popular digital-age trends like Uber and Kickstarter, putting an incredibly over-the-top Image Comics spin on it.
The comic is set to hit stores August 15th, so we won’t have to wait long to get our hands on it. Crowded is the product of a big, all-star team of writers and artists—Christopher Sebela, Ro Stein, Ted Brandt, Triona Farrel, and Cardinal Rae—who are as excited to be creating it as we are to read it.
I’ve been wanting to do this book for a couple years now, but it took me this long to figure out a pair of characters I could fall in love with and follow through our messed up vision of the future – Sebela
This is such an amazing idea for a comic in so many ways, and Crowded starkly relevant in modern violent culture. Also, the concept of Dfend as the counter-defense to Reapr is such a beautifully true idea. Wherever there is a market, some company will spring up to fill that void. Need someone dead? Choose Reapr! Someone wants you dead? Choose Dfend! You can almost see the app icons on your phone’s home screen right now.
