Published by Double Fine? Check. Developed by Beau Blyth of Hyper Light Drifter? Check. Awesome soundtrack, retro-style greatness, graphic novel included? Check, check, check! Samurai Gunn 2 is bringing all that goodness into the upcoming Switch release of this follow-up to the 2013 hit indie. With simple retro appeal with modern design and execution, this is sure to be a hit, and the Switch is the place for it. Samurai Gunn 2 will release early 2019.
The announcement trailer for Samurai Gunn 2 shows off a game that, while designed in the style of an early NES title, is just bringing so much more. The idea that players will get and original graphic novel (I’m guessing digitally, accessed on the Switch itself) is an amazing way to bring more depth and character realization into the experience, and if that soundtrack didn’t have you pumped, I don’t know what will.
A news item on Double Fine’s website details some of the story and setting, the new and novel gameplay mechanics, and the multiplayer features. No word on if there is couch co-op or not, but you can team up with 1-3 friends cooperatively, as well as slice each other up in multiplayer battle. I personally don’t play with a lot of others on Switch, reserving that more for PS4, so the single-player experience is what I’m looking forward to here.
As per the announcement, the game doesn’t have an exact release date, but as mentioned above, is expected early next year. While that’s a pretty open window, and an easy way out of a firm release date, fans shouldn’t expect any prolonged development. We will likely see it pretty early in the year. With all of the huge titles coming out now and throughout the rest of 2018, it will be a pretty great cleanser after the winter binge.
