Just a couple weeks ago, CD Projekt Red presented us with a cool livestream of the upcoming single player RPG, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Fresh on its heels is this official gameplay trailer, showing of the illustrated characters, breathtaking locales, and, of course, fierce Gwent battles. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales releases for PC on October 23rd, and on PS4 and Xbox One on December 4th.
As you can see in the trailer, CD Projekt Red has sunk a lot of time into fleshing out the Gwent portion of Thronebreaker. In comparison to Gwent battles in The Witcher 3, Thronebreaker battles are full of cool animations much like Hearthstone. I particularly like the added touch of having the art on the cards themselves animate within the card’s frame.
The War Camp acts as the hub, where players can upgrade and train their troops, but most of the game looks to be centered around battles in the form of Gwent, and exploration. The exploration appears to be less exciting than the battles themselves, but still promises that we’ll get to see parts of the Witcher world that we haven’t visited previously.
Originally, I was sure this game would be hesitant to feature the titular Witcher, Geralt. I know the game, as part of The Witcher Tales, is trying to distance itself a bit from the Witcher trilogy, so it would make sense to draw the line and keep Geralt out of it. However, now we might get some form of cameo from the Butcher of Blaviken, because they definitely tease him enough in this trailer. Around the 1:54 mark, we see some sort of poster (a wanted poster?), and a big shot of his scarred mug at the end.
We’re pretty excited for this game, even if it is centered around Gwent. I’ve admitted before that Gwent was my least favorite part of Witcher 3, but that’s mostly because there was so much Witching to do. Any excuse to venture into Rivia is a good one, so Thronebreaker won’t likely let us down.
